The object of our worship is Jesus Christ. He demonstrated His love for us while we were still unbelievers by dying on the cross to provide us the gift of everlasting life (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). Because He demonstrated His love for us, we are motivated to love Him (1 John 4:19). Worship motivated by love is acceptable to God (Isaiah 56:6-7; 2 Corinthians 5:5-9).
To understand the process of worship, understand that God is a God of order and there is a process for all things. Take for example, Jesus’ instruction on how to pray (Matt 6:9-13)
“9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”.
This is not a prayer to be memorized and recited. It is simply a model that God provided that will keep us on track for decisive and effective prayer time.
So it is with our worship time. There are times when a re-focus is required. God has also left us a model that will help with our approach to Him in Worship. This model is laid out beginning in Exodus 26.
God MUST be approached (worshipped) properly. This is confirmed in John 4:23-24: “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
The process of shifting from our natural man into a spiritual being “worshipping God in Spirit” must be done intentionally! This process is done by focusing on the representation of the furniture in the Tabernacle:
Outer Court – Furniture: Brazen Altar, Laver
This is a representation of man’s body. It is here that we should follow Romans 12:1 and present our bodies a living sacrifice unto God. Our five senses are given back to Him. We give God our hands, our feet, our voices, all of our physical attributes). Imagine if every word we say and action we take is ordered by God? In this step we must remember that allowing God control of our body is a requirement in order to ultimately worship God in Spirit and in truth.
Holy Place. Furniture: Seven branch lampstand, Table of Showbread, Altar of Incense
This is a representation of man’s soul. It is here that we relinquish control of our mind, emotions, and will. We surrender to our Savior, and ask that He take total control of our minds! God take control of our thoughts. Balance our emotions, oh God. Let there be no more emotional roller coaster experiences that cause us to flow from happy to sad, optimistic to pessimistic, etc. God can and will give us a PEACE that cannot be explained. We surrender our wills to God. Let every move that we make, be in line with the perfect will of the Master!
Holy of Holies – Furniture: Ark of the Covenant
This is a representation of man’s spirit. After man has surrendered his body and soul, he is now positioned to make John 4:23-24 a reality. Almighty God is waiting and available to receive true worship from us. Let’s not be confused: Worship is all about HIM! However, to truly encounter God through spirit to spirit experience, this cleansing / sacrificial process is required.
Understanding the model for effective worship should be our goal in every aspect of our life.
